In a historic moment for Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Nawaz Sharif has been re-elected as the party president, marking a triumphant return to leadership after a tumultuous six-year hiatus. This unopposed election, held at a charged general council meeting in Lahore, signifies not only a victory for Sharif but also a pivotal turning point for PML-N as it braces for the future under his seasoned guidance.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in a show of unwavering loyalty, stepped down from his position as the PML-N president on 11 May, paving the way for his brother’s return. Shehbaz Sharif’s heartfelt letter to the party emphasised the resilience and dedication with which Nawaz Sharif had led the party through turbulent times. “The time has come for Muhammad Nawaz Sharif to resume his rightful place as the president of the PML-N,” he stated.
Nawaz Sharif’s ousting in 2018 was a direct result of a Supreme Court ruling linked to the fabricated Panama Papers case, which disqualified him under Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution. However, recent acquittals in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia references, alongside a landmark Supreme Court verdict quashing lifetime disqualification under Article 62(1)(f), cleared the path for his return.
With Nawaz Sharif back at the helm, PML-N is poised for a resurgence. The party’s focus remains on steering Pakistan towards progress and prosperity, a vision Nawaz reiterated in his speech.
The general council meeting, initially slated for 11 May but rescheduled to coincide with the celebration of Pakistan’s 26 years as a nuclear power, saw an outpouring of support for Nawaz. PML-N Punjab President Rana Sanaullah highlighted the sentiment within the party, stating, “Nawaz Sharif was disqualified in 2017 by the Supreme Court through a conspiracy. Now it is time that he assumes the office of the party president and leads the party to new heights of popularity.”
Addressing the enthusiastic crowd, Nawaz Sharif expressed gratitude and reaffirmed his commitment to the party and the nation. He lambasted the previous disqualification, describing it as unjust and politically motivated. “Call on those who decided that Nawaz is disqualified forever to see Nawaz stand before you again. Why was the decision made and for what reason? That Nawaz did not take a salary from his son?” he asked.
The unity and determination within PML-N was palpable as Nawaz Sharif praised the steadfastness of party members and leaders, including Maryam Nawaz and Hamza Shahbaz, who have shown remarkable resilience in the face of adversity. He commended Shehbaz Sharif for his dedication and for maintaining the party’s integrity during challenging times.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his address, highlighted the injustices faced by Nawaz and the party. He directly accused PTI founder Imran Khan of orchestrating rigging in the 2018 elections and criticised his leadership style. “The injustice done to you in 2017… God has restored you to your former position and respect with a great majority,” Shehbaz remarked, emphasising the vindication of Nawaz Sharif.
The intra-party elections were meticulously organised by a five-member election commission led by Rana Sanaullah. Despite receiving nomination papers from eleven candidates, the overwhelming support for Nawaz Sharif ensured his unopposed election.
With Nawaz Sharif back at the helm, PML-N is poised for a resurgence. The party’s focus remains on steering Pakistan towards progress and prosperity, a vision Nawaz reiterated in his speech. He urged the party to brace for challenges but assured that dedication and hard work would lead to a brighter future for the nation.
As PML-N moves forward under his leadership, the party stands united and ready to tackle the challenges ahead.
